A Tireless Advocate for Individuals with Learning Disabilities

The Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) honours the memory of Lawrence Barns, who served as President and CEO for 13 years until his passing on June 19, 2024.

Lawrence was a deeply valued colleague, leader, and friend to many. He brought unwavering compassion, joy, and advocacy to everything he did — and his impact continues to be felt across the province and beyond.

As a tireless advocate for individuals with learning disabilities, Lawrence helped shape a stronger, more inclusive Ontario. He was appointed to the Minister’s Advisory Council on Special Education, where he amplified the voices of those with learning disabilities and co-occurring conditions such as ADHD. Under his leadership, LDAO launched several key initiatives that continue to thrive, including:

  • LD@home and LD@school, providing critical resources for families, students, and educators
  • The TalkLD Podcast, creating space for community stories and learning
  • The Educators’ Institute, a bilingual professional learning event for Ontario educators

Lawrence was widely respected for his clarity of vision, creative problem-solving, and steady leadership in advancing support systems for individuals with learning disabilities. His influence also reached the national stage through his collaboration with the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada.

Lawrence’s legacy is one of connection, courage, and care. He strengthened systems, empowered people, and led with heart. While we miss him deeply, we carry his work forward with gratitude and purpose.
